Relationships and Attachment - God's Primary Setting for Healthy, Joyful Living
by Chris Coble, MFT Intern

“ The thief comes only to steal, kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life,
and have it to the full ~ Jesus, John 10:10

Around 1956, a young MD by the name of John Bowlby began years of studies and theoretical writing that led him to an incredible finding: relationship is the key to life, and the quality of that life. Bowlby, and others working with him, found that when people have a false sense or disbelief in themselves and/or others, the quality of both their life and relationships inherently decreases.

This false sense of self and/or others, I believe, can be seen as “the thief,” or the enemy many of us battle. Proper attachment with, and a healthy sense of self and/or others, is akin to the healthy, prosperous and “full” life Jesus desires for us.

Can a healthy relationship really save a person, a marriage, and/or a parent-child connection? John Bowlby thought so. And theologically, personally and professionally, I concur. I believe that God created man for relationship.

He could have been perfectly content either on His own, or with the sky, manzanita bushes, lizards, and/or giraffes. But none of these wonderful creations pleased him enough, or filled His core need – that for relationship. And thus we were born – out of God’s need and desire for an intimate knowing, otherwise called relationship. And even in His communion with man, He saw that man needed more; and so woman was created, for an intimate knowing . . .a relationship. And this is what please(d)(s) God.
