Janie Sheedy
I went into the field of psychotherapy with a passion for people. I try to help people gain insight into how the past has informed the present.
I am a firm believer that we are not the sum total of what we've done or what has happened to us. Our identity has far more intrinsic value.
As a trauma-informed practitioner, my work is committed toward helping people heal and find resolution from traumatic events in their lives. While we cannot change the "what was" of our lives, we can soften the sharp edges of trauma wounds so they can be part of our narrative without defining nor hijacking the essence of who we are. Trauma expert Gabor Mate wrote “Trauma isn’t just what happened to you. It’s what happened inside of you because of what happened to you.” I am committed to collaborating with clients on that journey.
I specialize in EMDR, a trauma treatment modality. I have advanced training in EMDR, am a board approved EMDR Consultant, and have worked as an EMDR facilitator in training therapists in EMDR.
I have also worked as an Adjunct Professor at my alma mater, Western Seminary. I am a learner by nature, and I have loved walking alongside students who are at the beginning of their own journey as therapists. I strive to communicate the same passion to my clients with the firm belief that we all have the capacity for growth.
In my spare time, I love to swim, bike ride, create wheel thrown ceramics, and spend time with my husband, daughter, family, friends and my very energetic Golden Retriever Jackson. I am also very fond of being involved in group Bible studies.
My educational background is:
Master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Western Seminary
Bachelor’s degree in psychology from Excelsior College
I have certifications in:
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) board certified with the EMDR International Association (EMDRIA)
EMDR Approved Consultant, EMDR International Association
